BACKGROUND HISTORY
Rooted in a Legacy of Faith and Service
The Handmaids of the Holy Child Jesus is a pontifical Women Religious Congregation founded by Mother Mary Charles Magdalene Walker RSC in Calabar, Nigeria, in January 1931. Mother Mary Charles Magdalene Walker dedicated her life to uplifting the standard of living for the people she served. She believed that a missionary should extend their hands to meet the needs of the growing Church, beyond their specific strengths. Her faith, selfless sacrifice, complete trust in Divine Providence, and love for people rejected by others made her unique. Her vision for an indigenous Religious Congregation was realized when four young women she taught at St. Joseph’s Convent School in Calabar expressed their desire to become Religious Sisters.
